Auto Moving Guide
Preparing your vehicle for auto transport
If you need to transport your vehicle, there are certain things that must be done to prepare your vehicle.
Most transport companies will inspect the vehicle prior to shipment. They will note any damage and have you sign a bill of lading, agreeing to the assessment. It is a good idea to clean your vehicle before the inspection and transport. It is also a good idea to have the vehicle serviced prior to the transport.
Make sure to have a complete set of keys and alarm remotes for the shipping company. Although you should disconnect or disable any alarm before transporting, it is a good idea to have the vehicle transported with the alarm remotes, in case they are needed.
Remove all of your personal belongings from the vehicle. Also, remove the spare tire cover and the car cover, if applicable. Usually, the shipping company will not agree to ship the vehicle with these items intact or even inside the vehicle. You will also have to remove any roof racks or items that are not permanently installed in the vehicle. Finally, it is a good idea to remove or retract the antennae.
Depending on the destination of the vehicle, you will want to add coolant or antifreeze before the transport. Finally, make sure that there is less than a half tank of gas in the car, prior to shipping.
