Moving from California to Nevada: the complete 2026 guide
One of the busiest relocation corridors in the country — what it costs, the federal protections you gain the moment you cross a state line, and the residency question that decides whether the tax move actually works.
California to Nevada is one of the highest-volume moving corridors in the United States, and it runs on two very different roads. Southern Californians take I-15 across the Mojave to Las Vegas and Henderson, roughly 270 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Northern Californians take I-80 over the Sierra Nevada to Reno, Sparks and Carson City, about 220 miles from San Francisco. Same state pair, completely different logistics.
What both routes share is a legal fact that changes everything about your rights as a customer: the moment your shipment crosses the state line, your move stops being a local job and becomes a federally regulated one. This guide covers what that means, what the move costs, and the sequence of DMV, utility and tax steps that follow.
What a California to Nevada move costs
Interstate moves are not priced by the hour. They are priced on the weight of your shipment multiplied by mileage, plus accessorial charges for packing, stairs, long carries and shuttle service. That is why a cross-desert move from Los Angeles can cost less than a difficult local move inside San Francisco: the truck is doing the expensive part, not the crew.
| Home size | LA / San Diego to Las Vegas | Bay Area / Sacramento to Reno |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | $1,400 – $2,800 | $1,300 – $2,600 |
| 2 – 3 bedrooms | $2,900 – $5,200 | $2,700 – $4,900 |
| 4+ bedrooms | $4,800 – $7,500 | $4,500 – $7,000 |
Typical quoted ranges for full-service interstate moves in 2026, before packing services. Peak-season summer dates run at the upper end.
Three levers move that number more than anything else. Weight is the first: every thousand pounds you do not ship is money back, so purge before you pack rather than after you unpack. Season is the second, with May through September carrying a substantial premium on this corridor. Access is the third — a fourth-floor walk-up in Oakland or a Las Vegas cul-de-sac too tight for a 53-foot trailer both trigger shuttle charges. Our 2026 moving cost breakdown explains how weight-and-mileage pricing works in more detail, and the guide to packing fragile items covers what you can safely handle yourself.
Crossing a state line changes your rights
This is the single most useful thing to understand before you book. An interstate household goods move is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and federal rules give you protections that simply do not exist on an in-state job. (For contrast, see our guide to moving from Manhattan to Long Island, where the move never leaves New York and a state agency governs instead.)
Four things your interstate mover owes you:
- Active operating authority. Confirm the USDOT and MC numbers on the FMCSA registered mover lookup and check the safety record on the SAFER company snapshot. If all you have is a name from an advert, you can search USDOT records by company name and work back to the number from there. A broker is not a carrier — ask which one you are hiring.
- A written estimate you understand. Binding fixes the price, non-binding is a projection, and binding not-to-exceed caps you while letting the price drop if the shipment weighs less than estimated. On a long haul, not-to-exceed is usually the customer-friendly option.
- The disclosure booklet. Movers must provide Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, which sets out weighing, delivery windows and dispute rules.
- Two liability options. Released Value Protection is free and caps the carrier at 60 cents per pound per article; Full Value Protection costs more and covers repair or replacement value. FMCSA explains both under valuation and insurance. Articles worth more than $100 per pound must be listed on the shipping documents in advance or the carrier can limit its liability on them.
If something goes wrong you have nine months from delivery to file a written claim, and unresolved disputes go to the National Consumer Complaint Database. Before you sign anything, read FMCSA’s list of moving fraud red flags — a large cash deposit, a quote given without a survey, and a blank estimate are the three that account for most complaints on high-volume corridors like this one.
Who licenses movers on each end
State licensing still matters, because many companies you call will do local work on one side or the other, and a licence tells you they are an established operator rather than a truck rental with a website.
In California, moves that stay inside the state are licensed by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services at the Department of Consumer Affairs, which took over household goods oversight from the CPUC — the utilities commission now licenses only passenger carriers. BHGS publishes Household Movers Information for consumers and a short moving tips flyer.
In Nevada, intrastate household goods carriers are regulated by the Nevada Transportation Authority, which issues certificates, publishes each carrier’s filed tariff and provides household goods moving tips. Neither licence substitutes for federal authority on your actual cross-border move, but a company holding all three is a company that has been inspected by somebody.
Timing, and the two very different drives
On the southern route, the enemy is heat and holiday traffic. I-15 through Barstow and Baker regularly runs above 110°F from June to September, which matters for candles, electronics, vinyl records and anything else that deforms in a hot trailer. It also matters for your own vehicle if you are driving alongside the truck. Sunday afternoon and holiday-weekend traffic back toward Los Angeles is legendary; going the other way, plan to leave early.
On the northern route, the enemy is winter. I-80 crosses Donner Pass at over 7,000 feet, and chain controls or full closures are routine from November through April. A storm can hold a truck for a day or more. If you are moving to Reno in winter, ask the carrier directly what happens to your delivery window if the pass closes, and check Caltrans and Nevada DOT road conditions the morning of the move rather than assuming.
One expectation to set regardless of route: interstate carriers quote a delivery window, not a delivery date, because your shipment may share a trailer. Windows of three to ten days are normal. If you need a guaranteed date, ask about a dedicated truck and expect to pay for it.
Vehicles, licences and the Nevada DMV
Nevada handles incoming vehicles differently from California, and this is where new arrivals lose an afternoon they did not budget.
- Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection before first registration. These can be done at a DMV office without an appointment.
- Vehicles registered in the Las Vegas and Reno metropolitan areas generally need an emissions test — see the Nevada emission control program for which zip codes are covered and which vehicles are exempt.
- Registration and licence conversion both have deadlines for new residents; the current requirements and document checklist are on the Nevada DMV new resident page, with fees and steps under vehicle registration.
- Tell your auto insurer before you go. Premiums are rated by garaging address, and a policy listing a California address after you have moved can create a coverage argument at exactly the wrong moment.
The tax question, honestly
Nevada levies no state personal income tax, and for many people that is the entire reason for the move. It is also the part most often oversimplified.
California does not stop taxing you because a truck crossed the border. The Franchise Tax Board determines residency by domicile and by where your closest connections are — home, family, employment, licences, bank accounts, professional registrations. You will generally file a part-year resident return for the year you leave, and California retains the right to tax income sourced in California even after you become a Nevada resident. The FTB explains the framework under residency status and specifically for part-year and nonresidents, with the detail in Publication 1031.
If you keep a California house, a California job, or you plan to spend significant time back in the state, the residency question is genuinely complex and worth an hour with a tax professional before the move rather than after. This is general information and not tax advice.
The rest of the paperwork
File your USPS change of address early — forwarding can begin within three business days but the Postal Service suggests allowing up to two weeks. Register to vote in Nevada, transfer prescriptions, and open utility accounts before the truck arrives; NV Energy serves both the Las Vegas and Reno areas, and water and trash are usually separate municipal accounts.
Families should start school registration early. Clark County School District, covering Las Vegas and Henderson, is one of the largest districts in the country, and enrollment generally requires proof of residency plus immunization records that meet Nevada rather than California requirements. Our 8-week moving checklist puts all of this in order against your move date.
Finding a mover for this route
Look for carriers that run the corridor regularly rather than treating it as a one-off. A company with a Las Vegas or Reno terminal can often consolidate your shipment more efficiently, which shows up in the price.
Our California movers directory lists 3,796 USDOT-registered carriers, and the Nevada movers directory covers 247 more. By metro, the deepest coverage on this route is Los Angeles (223 companies), San Diego (156), Sacramento (106) and San Francisco (79) on the origin side, and Las Vegas (147), Reno (17) and Henderson (16) on the destination side. If you already have a company name, run it through the search page to pull its credentials before you call.
Common questions
How long does delivery take? Loading and delivery are usually one to three days apart on this corridor, but the contractual window is longer. Ask for the window in writing.
Is a container or freight trailer cheaper? Often yes for smaller households, because you pay for space rather than labor. You do the loading, and the timeline is less flexible.
Do I need to declare anything at the state line? No agricultural inspection applies leaving California for Nevada; the checkpoints run the other direction, on produce entering California.
When is the cheapest time to move? October through April, mid-week and mid-month. Avoid the last weekend of any month and the weeks around major Las Vegas conventions, when trucks and hotel rooms both tighten.
